Health services Assessment Tool for Schools (HATS)
The Health services Assessment Tool for Schools, or "HATS" for short, assesses the comprehensiveness of school health services, the level of infrastructure to support those services, and the strength and implementation of school health services policies and protocols. The tool sets a "gold standard" for comprehensive school health services that LEAs can work toward.

LEAs can use this self-scoring online tool to identify areas of strength and opportunities for growth and track improvements over time. Completing this tool is an important first step toward evaluating and improving school health services policies and practices in your district, with the ultimate goal of improving the health and well-being of all students.

While the AAP encourages each district/consortium to complete the entire HATS assessment, in some circumstances it may not be possible prior to the in-person training.
If the entire assessment cannot be completed, please be sure to answer the following questions:

Preventive Services = #11-13
Care Coordination= #3-5 & 8-9
Psychosocial Referrals = #1-7
Sexual Health Services= #1-7
Counseling and Health Information= #1-2

#1, 6, 9 & 11

Internal Communication= #1-3
Tracking and Reporting= #1, 3-4, 6, 9, 11, 17-22
Administration and Staffing= #1-23
*If Applicable- Coordination with School-based Health Centers= All

This tool was developed in partnership with leading school health organizations and experts in the field and has been tested by over 50 school districts.
